I genuinely am surprised. He had to retire soon being 71, but I though it'd be at the end of next season after having one more crack at the Champions League. He's going to be a tough one to replace.
Early reports place Moyes as the front runner... probably due to his contract being up at the end of this season.
Greatest manager ever... I'd be surprised if we ever see a manager like him again that will stay at one club for so long and win so many tophies.
I thought he'd do at least another season. Personally, I think Mourinho is going there. He's always wanted the job, and he's the best manager in the world (now Fergie is going), so it's a good fit. Is Moyes really good enough for the job? He's had no money, but good teams at Everton, but never produced a team that has even made the Champions League (he finished 4th once, but went out in the qualifiers). Would you trust him with the United job? He needs to go to Germany and do well there, or go to a side like Spurs where he can spend money and progress (altho I'd hate to lose AVB!)
Added bonus of Mourinho going to Utd would be all the pissed off Chelsea fans when they realise Jose doesn't really love them...
Im not a Utd fan, probably about as far from that as possible haha, but I cant see Mourinho going their, because Jose is a 3 season manager, he is a great manager but has never been a journey man, and Utd have always seem to go with journey men etc, ones that will stick at a team for many a years, developing them from the youth etc... That being said, aybe this would be Jose chance to stop moving around and become a permanent fixture at one club.
David Moyes being the front runner confuses me a little bit because he doesn't have a success track record either in the big competitions or dealing with the big named stars and big expense budgets etc... And I thought they may have gone with someone who would fit the bill as in a big named manager etc.. Definatly be interesting to see who will take over..
One thing would be interesting though, is if IT turns out like Busby.. where he retired to the directors office for one season before having to come back and rescue the club haha

Three seasons would be perfect for Utd as Mourinho would do what he does, and then a certain newly appointed Bayern Munich managers contract runs out. Pep is definately the long term manager Utd crave, and Jose will keep them at the top of the table before moving on to Paris or International football.
This is gonna be such a headache for Moyes. Every loss, bad decision or mistake will be magnified to a stupid extent that he'll probably have a heart attack on the touchline after one season.
But yeah he doesn't have enough Champions League experience to manage United, like when has he ever had to face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich before? It's easy to be the best in the league but not the best in europe. And I hope United still win trophies cos I don't want the Premiership to be a tennis match between two billionaire sugar daddies for the rest of my life.

I thought Mourinho was going to Chelsea?
Not signed or announced. Lots of hints, but I think he'll either go to utd or paris.
He might go to chelsea, but it would be a step backwards, and u have to ask why he would go there.
I think jose is motivated by ego primarly, which means a move to chelsea would be pointless. The best he could achieve is winning a title he has already won with them, or winning the champs league which di mattio already did. Nothing to stoke his ego. But at paris, he'll win the title and be the first manager to win titles in 5 different countries and if he wins the champs league he'll be the first to win it with 3 different clubs. Lots of ego stoking there!
If he follows fergie at utd then he joins the worlds biggest club, but one that has underperformed massively in europe. He could be the manager that overtakes liverpools 5 european cups. Again, lots of ego.
Just dont see the point of him going back to chelsea.
Loads of reports going around saying that Moyes is the man, and that Ferguson has personally recommended him to the board.
To me, European experience doesn't come into it like some people are saying. Yeah he has none, but neither did Jose when he started out and he won the UEFA and Champions League in his first managerial job. Not saying that Moyes is as good as Jose, but just pointing out the experience thing and how it doesn't matter. If you want to be at the top, you have to aim high and show no fear, which is what Moyes does. Yeah, he might not do great in Europe during his first season if he took over, but he might also take to it like a pro.
If Jose took over, he'd be there for about 3 years before getting bored and moving on. Or he'd piss someone off a board level and leave. From what I gather, United are looking at someone who will be there for a long time, not just a few years.
Everton and Spurs were the only teams to beat both City and United this season, Moyes is a great choice. He's about as good as it gets in terms of being a long-term manager in this era too, having been at Everton for 11 years now. And realistically, anyone would be a step down. Good luck to him.

Well... looks like they've confirmed Moyes and he'll join when his contract with Everton expires at the beginning of July. 6 year contract so they're showing some real faith in him. Hope he does well.
And good on United (I don't say that often) for being a big club that goes for another British manager instead of looking abroad.
I thought since rumours started I think it was last season that Moyes was going to join when the retirement did happen and I think it's a good choice. He has done well at Everton. They aren't a Premiership winning team by any means but they are always up or around those European places and they have signed some great players over the years so he definitely knows what he's doing.

Manchester United have named Ryan Giggs as player-coach with Phil Neville set to become their new first-team coach.
Giggs, who is 40 in November, and former player Neville are the latest additions to new manager David Moyes' backroom team at Old Trafford.
"I'm delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player coach," said Moyes.

Great. Gives him something to do since he'll probably be unused for most of the season. Giggs is one of the best players ever, he can do good in a coaching role.

The biggest news in the football world With Ferigie retiring. I say good riddance but I can't deny he's the greatest manager ever. Now what for United? Mourinho? Moyes? Bayern Manager?
