In a statement to ESPN, WWE confirmed their plans to return to live programming for Raw, Smackdown and NXT starting with Monday's show. In their statement, the company points to a need to provide the public with a "diversion from these hard times" and that the shows would be produced with only "essential personnel" present. As noted already, WWE had originally planned to tape significant content over the next week but suddenly reversed course on Friday afternoon while taping Smackdown, deciding instead to air each of their flagship shows live. If rumors are to be believed, this was almost strictly a Vince McMahon decision.

"We believe it is now more important than ever to provide people with a diversion from these hard times. We are producing content on a closed set with only essential personnel in attendance following appropriate guidelines while taking additional precautions to ensure the health and wellness of our performers and staff. As a brand that has been woven into the fabric of society, WWE and its Superstars bring families together and deliver a sense of hope, determination and perseverance."

Really surprised this idea hasn't been shot down already... but no surprise that it's Vinces decision.

It seems that WWE can continue because they're an "essential business". Anyone care to guess why/how they're an essential business? Does essential business actually mean anything anymore?

Main Event

They consider themselves essential because they are a major entertainment factor. Now, whether you consider entertainment essential is completely subjective. But, if you consider the fact that most professional sports leagues have gone on hiatus for the lockdown, and they are purely there for entertainment, not to mention the vast majority of media studios shutting down, well, Vince seems to be out on his own at this point. But all he can see is dollar signs, especially as I'd imagine there's been a rather large uptake on subscriptions for the WWE network, and the fact that his only competition right now are re-runs, so he's trying to take advantage and line his pockets. I just pray that those he's putting in danger have the balls to refuse to work in such dangerous conditions. And that Vince will pay any medical bills from his own pocket, not that that's particularly likely...

And no, when you are someone like Vince McMahon, 'essential business' doesn't really mean anything!

-- In the event that WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando, FL is shut down due to the ongoing pandemic, Vince McMahon noted to investors that the company has a “B-Plan” on standby but did not want to give out any details. The Observer Newsletter reports that there are actually several backups plans in place including the television studio at WWE’s corporate offices in Stamford, CT with the plan being that they would devise the setting of the venue to look very similar to the Performance Center. The overall belief is that WWE’s venue in Orlando is safe because of Linda McMahon’s pledge to spend over $18 million as part of Donald Trump’s Super Pac and Governor Ron DeSantis’ loyalties to Trump.

-- If WWE is forced to move out of Florida for their weekly TV shows, the bigger problem won't be the venue itself but likely getting talent in and out of whatever state it is they end up holding their events in.
