Welcome to the Greatest Nintendo Game of All Time contest, first round.

The matchups were randomly decided.

I will put the matches up every other day, and each round will be open for three days (so there'll probably be 2 or 3 matches taking place at any one time). I want to get through the first round as quickly as possible.

ROUND ONE, MATCH EIGHTEEN

Contra (NES)

Contra was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in February 1988. This version was produced in-house by Konami and features several differences from the arcade release in order to better suit the NES's hardware. The game can be played by up to two players, but due to the graphical limitations of the NES, Bill and Lance lost their individualized character designs. While successful in the arcades, the game became and remained widely popular and remembered when it was ported to the NES.  It was voted #1 by gaming website IGN.com as being the "Toughest Game to Beat". Nintendo Power ranked Contra the seventh best Nintendo Entertainment System video game, calling it one of the best multiplayer NES games.

Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire

Pokémon Ruby Version and Sapphire Version are the third installments of the Pokémon series of role-playing video games, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. Ruby and Sapphire received mostly positive reviews, though critics were divided in their assessment of the games, especially on the gameplay and graphics. Most of the complaints focused on the fact that the gameplay had not changed much since previous generations, and the connectivity issues revolving around the past generations. With the popularity of Pokémon waning at the time, the games sold less than previous generations. However, they were still a critical and commercial successes; with around 16 million copies sold according to IGN, they are the best-selling games for the Game Boy Advance.

WHO WINS? YOU DECIDE.

It's a 3-3 tie. So I'll keep this open until we get a deciding vote. If we don't get a deciding vote, I'll put both through in a 3-way-tie for the next round.

The first round is over. No deciding vote was cast. Both games are through to the next round.
