-- The AJ Styles/Daniel Bryan and announcement of the handicap match also seems like it could be the beginning of a heel turn for Bryan. If WWE feels as if Bryan will be leaving the company later this year, it would probably increase the chance of them turning him heel.

-- Not only would it somewhat hurt his mainstream appeal and value, but WWE's goal - should Bryan leave - will be to try and minimize him taking any WWE fans to the indie scene or another promotion. The thinking is that if he leaves as a heel, less fans will be inclined to follow him wherever he chooses to go.

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

I like heel Daniel Bryan. But I can't see WWE's tactic working. He's not like a Triple H who can play the fans as a face and be incredibly hated as a heel - although maybe not a great example because people like heel Triple H... just like they'd like heel Daniel Bryan. This is actually the kind of shit that would work if fans didn't overly care for him anyway. But everyone knows that he's good enough to make it work and people would love it. The guy is just too over with WWE fans to not be liked whatever he does, and if he leaves to pursue wrestling elsewhere, fans will follow whether he leaves as a face or a heel.

I don't buy this tbh. It's just speculation from the Observer with no solid proof. Also I think that's bullshit logic by Meltzer about heel Bryan not having as many fans and I think he is talking out of his ass tbh.

Bryan hasn't actually done anything heelish and I think they might swerve and do a double turn, making Shane the heel vs Face Bryan.

Bryan as a heel would be more fun than anything. So would be a stupid move that would hopefully backfire. I would love it though if they turned Shane instead and just painted Owens and Zayn as being right all along. Would be funny. But I also wouldn't be adverse to a heel Bryan either as that's be a nice change. Fans won't hate him though, they'll only boo him because they're meant to, not because they're less interested in him.
