Oh man, hadn't seen the ship picture previously. Was excited for this before now lol. Nah, I'll still watch it and be excited for it.
My best mate is a huge Trekkie, has watched all the TV series and films, can tell you everything about the ships and draw the layouts of them. Myself, I like the films and the boxset of the original 6 films is lovely. Was never taken by the TV series for some reason, although I have watched a load. Voyager, original series with Shatner, The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart which had one of my favourite characters in Riker. Always preferred the films though, but I will definitely be watching this. Apparently it's going to follow a more traditional series format instead of a different story per episode like previous series.
Benji, if you have not seen DS9, do it now. The first two seasons like most trek series are not the best with only a few outstanding episodes. DS9 has story arcs, similar to Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5. The main storyline is the Dominion War, arguably the best thing ever in Trek. I would suggest to see if you like it, and to see a completely different side of trek take a look at "In The Pale Moonlight" S06E19.
Also, the trailer for beyond:

There is a masdive part of me that's excitend for more Trek. But why can't we go forward in history. For crying out loud I'm getting so tired of going backwards. DS9 is the best series to date.
I'ld say that DS9 had less flops than TNG but TNG takes the cake for the best episodes. Best of Both Worlds, The Inner Light, Measure of a Man, Redemption, Chain of Command... i could go on. Oh yea, the last episode All good things... that should have been the first movie instead of generations.
I also really wish they went forward. I get the argument that advanced tech has made some things too easy, specifically replicators which don't exist in TOS or ENT. It would have also given the chance to have some cross overs, like TNG and DS9 (aka Worf, O'Brien, Thomas Riker) without ruining the actual show like they did with the ENT finale.
On the O'Brien note, if you haven't seen O'Brien at work cartoons you really should.
I'm not a massive Star Trek nut, but I always like Voyager the best. Can't say I'll watch this unless it gets a lot of good reviews.

Thanks Taker_2004 for the banner!
I had been looking forward to this for so long since the first rumours came out about a new star trek series... But like mahy others I was hoping to see a post Voyager series, with the possibility of the use of the borg transwarp hub. I would have loved to have seen a series where it wasnt limited on what has already preceeded it etc but surely another prequel series cant actually 'Go where noone has gone before' because we all know what happens after.. I mean, this series is going to predate the arrival of Q.. although that could be cool to see some Q action again hahaha
I was one of the few that even loved the theme tune to Enterprise as I thought it described the series perfectly and the tone of the song fit well i thought, but then I have always been a trekkie so i will obviously be watching and I do wonder if it will hit the magic Star Trek 7 series limit or if it will fall early like Enterprise..
As for DS9 i have to agree it is definitely worth watching if for nothing else, for Jadzia Dax alone haha

I think they took the decision to go backwards because of the fan film Axanar, which was gonna focus on the klingon war, and probably do a better job of it than CBS were doing. Granted, I'm more into Star Wars than tar Trek, but I have always enjoyed what they did, and the whole lawsuit and crackdown on fan related content has really pissed me off. Plus, the hip desing from Axanar is soooo much nicer!

While I never thought much of Enterprise, I fucking love that song too,

It was actually Fuller who pitched the timeline. He loved the TOS era where they didnt have all the crazy gadgets and tech. Its set in 2255, so 100 years after ENT, exactly as it ended in 2155. Federation will still be a baby, likely with teething problems.
There are some cool things that happened in the 2250's
- Kirk is a lieutenant (god dont bring him in thought) (TOS)
- Treaty with the Shelliak Confederacy (TNG)
- Kodos The Butcher changes identities and starts an acting troupe (TOS)
I also take back the Romulan-Earth War, it is in the 2100's

WhIle it was an ok song, it was by far the worse theme song of the franchise. It lacked that massive Orchestra vibe that the other shows had.
A Handy Infographic of what we know so far...

Not going to lie that's a huge help. Thanks Essa.
No idea if there are any other Trekies on the forums. For the first time since the abrupt ending of Enterprise, there will be another episodic series called Star Trek Discovery. It wont be focused on the captain, rather likely the first officer and she was announced as Number 1. To be set between Enterprise and The Original Series. I h
The Good
- Finally back
- Lots of interesting stories in that time period (ex. romulan war)
- Bryan Fuller is in charge (he puts out golden stuff, my fav being dead like me)
- If you arent in Canada or the US, episodes will on netflix the day after
The Bad
- Its not set after the end of Voyager, therefore canon will be tricky. If set after voyager less restrictions
- It will be available in the US streaming
- Only one episode released at a time
- Only 13 episodes in the first season
- Ugly ship
